Barbet Finland publishes each genetic research participated dog's picture in their own picture gallery.
Note! In this gallery does not necessarily have all the genetic research participated dog's pictures.

If your dog has been participated in genetic research program, and you want publish dog's picture in the picture gallery, please send your dog's picture to webmaster (webmaster @ barbet.fi). Remember also mention the dog's official name and date of birth.

Genetic research program

Hannes Lohi (PhD, Docent, Academy Research Fellow) has started a canine genetic research program in the University of Helsinki.

The barbet is involved in the study and especially in the study of epilepsy. To be able to conduct these studies, Hannes Lohi needs blood samples from the affected dogs and their healthy siblings and parents as much as possible.

The research group wishes that owner and breeders would contribute to the study by sending then DNA samples, pedigree information and clinical data to ensure necessary resources for epilepsy gene identification.

If you would like to contribute to these studies You can send a blood sample by following the instructions for blood sample collection.

For more information, please visit the web-pages of the canine
genetic research program.

Latest news from the study

Important!  Now we have had a very important boost to the barbet epilepsy research project. The specialist neurology veterinarian and veterinary professor, Tarja Pääkkönen was formerly participating in research on Lagotto Romagnolos, and they found the genetic fault which causes juvenile epilepsy. Tarja Pääkkönen is very interested in barbet epilepsy and she has promised to analyze the answers of the research questionnaires. But this will happen only IF she gets enough answers! So please let's do this! Please read Tarja Pääkkönen's letter from the study --> Tarja Pääkköne's letter.

The questionnaire is required to be filled in for each barbet, also those who have not had epileptic seizures! Please ignore the text which says that the questionnaire should only be filled out for dogs who have had seizures. The research groups have asked ALL barbets to participate. If the particular question does not relate to your barbet (has never had seizures) you can skip to the next question. It is very easy. It is very important that the questionnaire is completed for sick dogs as well, so if you have filled a questionnaire for your epileptic dog before, please do it again!
The questionnaire can be found in Finnish, English, Swedish and German.

The questionnaires can be sent to the researchers by email or mail to:

Ranja Eklund will pass it on to Tarja Pääkkönen.

Reseach group has cheked that the gene mutation with barbet is not the same that causes seizures with young lagottos.

180 barbets worldwide has attended to genetic reseach (12/2009). Barbet Finland would like to thank barbets that has contributed to the study by donouring DNA-samples.
The reseach still needs more DNA-samples. More information and DNA-samples is needed especially from those barbets that has had seizures.
At the moment research is still incomplete. Aim is to find a gene test to epilepsy.

Breed-specific DNA sample volumes you can see here (in finnish).

Answer to the epilepsy questionnaire

If your barbet has had symptoms that can be compared to epilepsy, please fill in the questionnaire and send it to the research group, either by e-mail ranja.eklund @ helsinki.fi, or by post:
